Ashley Ackerman knows first-hand what it feels like to worry about every morsel she eats.
After surviving an anaphylactic reaction as a child, she and her mom, Kerry, worked together to create safe recipes, educate their family, and navigate allergy management.
Her food allergies inspired her to form a club at Ramapo High School which is educating and building a community to support kids and friends of kids with food allergies.
"I decided to extend my efforts for allergy awareness beyond Ramapo High School and help younger children in the community," said Ashley.
Her mentorship group, Allergy Pals, strives to offer emotional validation and support, anxiety reduction, increased social connections, empowerment through shared knowledge and emotional resilience to children with food allergies.
"I believe a food allergy support group can provide significant social-emotional benefits for individuals and families," said Ashley.
Ashley has hosted several get-togethers over the past year, including an Allergy Pals Halloween themed activity.
