The Inspiration
My name is Simone Fischer and I'm a senior at Ramapo High School. I've been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten and for my Girl Scout Gold Award project, I am sewing walker bags to help older adults carry everyday essentials with ease and create greater independence.
I was inspired by my 99-year-old great grandmother who uses a walker and I wanted to think of a way to support her. The bags have several pockets and are attached with velcro to make walkers more functional and personal, supporting both dignity and daily comfort and safety.
Designing the Bags
I researched a design and sewed a prototype walker bag for the Activity Director at Christian Health to share with the residents. They made a few suggestions about the design and I incorporated those modifications into the final product. All of the fabric for this project was generously donated by members of the Wyckoff community.
A Community Effort
I hosted a workshop at the library where volunteers assisted in cutting and sorting fabric pieces and we wrote thoughtful notes to include with the bags, turning the project into a collective community effort. I recently delivered 33 completed walker bags to the residents at Christian Health and plan to continue to sew them in my spare time.
Sharing the Project
I also created a website, www.sewingwalkerbag-goldaward.weebly.com with a tutorial video so others can learn how to make these bags. My hope is that other people use the pattern to make walker bags for the senior citizens in their community.
