When you think about libraries, you probably think of borrowing books, movies, magazines, and music. That's certainly true, and I'll return to that later—but it's far from all libraries offer.
When I talk about libraries, I focus on people. The people who visit and work in libraries, and the opportunities created there, are what make them such a vital part of any community.
Lifelong Learning
The library is a welcoming space for residents to work, study, and receive assistance from staff. If you need a quiet place to concentrate, the History Room is ideal, with multiple work surfaces and a no-talking policy.
Last year, the library added three Study Rooms for individuals or pairs to use independently or collaboratively (business use, including paid tutoring, is not permitted). Wyckoff residents may reserve a room up to one week in advance.
Many patrons come to the library seeking help with questions, locating materials, or placing requests. Our staff answered more than 14,000 questions last year, ranging from book recommendations and job searches to genealogical research, health resources, and technology assistance. Every day we help people print wirelessly, scan documents, upload files, and more. At any time, people are using our public computers, WiFi, and tables to work or study.
The Wyckoff Library is also a member of Literacy Volunteers of Pascack Valley. More than twenty trained volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring to neighbors learning English as a second language, creating meaningful learning experiences for both tutors and students.
Learning also extends beyond our walls. Thanks to the Friends of the Wyckoff Library, residents can visit local museums for little or no charge, including the 9/11 Memorial & Museum; American Museum of Natural History; The Frick Collection; Guggenheim; Hermitage; Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; New York Historical Society Museum & Library; Storm King and the recently added Museum of Modern Art.
Community
Some patrons visit daily, others weekly or monthly. If you haven't stopped in recently, check our events calendar or simply come by to say hello. In 2025, the library hosted more than 700 programs attended by over 23,000 people, from babies to those in their 90s.
Storytimes often introduce caregivers and children to one another for the first time. Many participants continue on to school-age art, science, and music programs, book discussion groups, and the Summer Reading Club. Teens also enjoy multiple monthly events.
Our programs for adults offer opportunities to connect and build community. Some groups meet at least once per month and always welcome new members. Ongoing groups include three book clubs, Yarn Therapy, Monday Movies, and tabletop gaming. We also host lectures, hands-on workshops, crafts, and concerts throughout the year.
The first half of 2026 features an exciting lineup including: A History of Olive Oil; Sound Bath Healing; Mah Jongg; An Introduction to AI; Pencil Sketching; Remember the Ladies: Women in the Time of the American Revolution; Celebrating the Genius of Pablo Picasso; Gut Check! How to Strengthen Your Second Brain; George and Martha Washington's Love Story; a murder mystery night and a luncheon featuring bestselling author, Jill Santopolo.
